UK based record label Lockdown Recordings has already proven itself as an outlet for cutting edge bass music and this continues for their next EP. After setting a benchmark with their Ill Truth presents various artists LP, they’ve once again defied expectations for a growing independent imprint and brought through a range of artists for another collaborative project, this time spearheaded by Superior Selectionz. Hailing from Yeovil, producers Lawrence Dodge, Sam A’Court and Rich Kingsmill formed Superior Selectionz in 2003, championing their first release on Lockdown Recordings which received a wide-ranging show of support. They’ve continued to refine their sound, resulting in their forthcoming EP ‘Layered’, featuring a collaboration from Ben Soundcscape, with Cybin also jumping on remix duties.
The jungle riddims of Superior Selectionz and Ben Soundscape’s ‘Lectric’ allows you to become fully immersed in the old-school roots of each artist, whilst also redefining their more contemporary output. With clanking breaks, a bassline which ducks and dives between each solid breakdown, Superior Selectionz and Ben Soundscape merge their production seamlessly in a way that breathes new life into a pivotal era. Next up Superior Selectionz rework ‘Mercury’ for a brand new VIP, which takes it through a more minimal undertaking whilst blasts of sonic move you deep into the track’s inner core. Following on from the VIP of ‘Mercury’ is Superior Selectionz and Ben Soundscape’s ‘Layered’, with its relentless drums and clinking hi-hats, it flows amongst shaking layers of bass which help to pad the record out. The track brings together Ben Soundscape and Superior Selectionz for another high-ranking combination of talents and this is something which won’t go unnoticed by global drum & bass fans.
The Cybin remix of ‘Backlash’, which takes on the track’s sampling and twists it into an almost unrecognisable form, finalises the EP. Each rave-lead call to arms drives the record forward, with Cybin using his darkly lead atmospherics to give it his own signature. And alongside three other fresh cuts, Lockdown Recordings have helped to reaffirm Superior Selectionz place within the genre. Their rise has been through the platform and it’s a rise which will remain on the ascent with Lockdown Recordings at the helm.
