Redpill: Submerge

When Cause4Concern first began to weave their place within the fabric of drum & bass, it became apparent that they’d be one of the most defining labels neurofunk had at its disposal. And since their very first release, they’ve prided themselves on leading the charge, continually setting standards and breaking boundaries with each carefully fashioned cut they unleashed from their intimidating roster of talented artists. And an artist who fits this calibre is Redpill, who’s ‘Submerge’ EP once again bridges the gap between expert technological manipulation and the type of sounds which obliterate dancefloors in the world’s darkest corners. Amongst four brand new, diligently crafted records, Redpill brings a production flare which would only be at home with Cause4Concern. Whether it’s the guttural bass riddims of ‘Fonky’, or the crunching, darkly lit undertones of ‘Party Aftermath’, the French maestro isn’t afraid to immerse you in his aggressive musicality.

Redpill’s ‘Fonky’ is a journey through curdling atmospherics, gradually building drum loops and bellowing bass notes. The track ducks and dives between a foreboding composition, before carefully picked out instrumentals chime their way throughout the mix. Next up, ‘Submerge’ is just as impressive. The groove snares you instantly, pulling you deep into its grasps and never allowing you up for breath. It’s impossible not to become fully enveloped by its ingenious mode of sonics, with light keys stepping you even further into the madness. ‘Party Aftermath’ brings the heat for a third time, flying at you with snapping flurries of beats and an LFO bassline which commits an aural assault throughout the track’s entirety. Bit by bit it gradually builds into a merciless concoction of quick-fire production skills and intensity, leaving you to bask in its growing power. And finally, ‘Dark Chords’ enters the fray, nodding to its namesake through its murky undertones and fearsome engineering. ‘Dark Chords’ snaps into play with moodily layered segments; its tinny percussive elements raise their head ominously between each break.

Redpill delivers another intimidating feat, demonstrating his unbridled capabilities and proving his penchant for drum & basses shadier waters. With Cause4Concern providing a formidable platform, his unrivalled quality of releases has remained as high as ever.
