Masker Ft. Jimmy Danger & Indigo Dark - Statement / At Midnight
Release Date: 30/09/2020
Label: Murky Digital
Catalog: MURK025
Following on from recent outstanding contributions to coveted labels Serial Killaz and Subway Soundz, rising drum and bass DJ/producer Masker makes his Murky Digital debut this September with “Dark Statement” / “At Night”, a hefty two-tracker featuring stellar vocal contributions from MCs Jimmy Danger and Indigo. A true natural at record production, the Hertfordshire native takes to everything from jungle to jump up like a duck to water, and this latest outing demonstrates yet another string to his bow: dark, menacing rollers.
A-side “Dark Statement” opens with eerie, discordant pads before breaking into a shuffling rhythm, while Cambridge mic man Jimmy Danger lays down some appropriately unnerving bars: “My statement is please die patient.” Bursting into a stonking, yet minimal drop dominated by roaring basslines and punchy subs, the track makes for a simultaneously riotous and stripped-back number, finding itself very much at home on the Portsmouth-based label, whose past releases from contemporaries like T>I and Vital have been very much in a similar vein to this.
Matching the brooding energy of its predecessor, “At Midnight” finds East Anglia barrer and EA Drumz affiliate Indigo spitting lucid lyrics over reverberating synth plucks, oscillating basslines and stop-start percussion. At the track’s thrilling climax, Masker continues to play on the tense aura he’s created, interspersing the snarling bass and jungle-leaning drums with excerpts of echoing foley sounds to create a wholly immersive experience, further cementing his reputation as one of the scene’s most gifted all-rounders.
