Prolix is an artist who’s earned his stripes, having been a part of the drum & bass world since some of its primary developments and holding the genre’s torch through his imprint Trendkill Records. And from its beginning to 2018, the label has paved the way for not only Prolix’s creative output, but also many up and coming producers who’ve provided their painstakingly woven records for its collection. Next up from Trendkill is a fresh double-sided single from heavyweights Gydra, an outfit who need little introduction after creating audio chaos with every formidable output. Hailing from the drum & bass scene’s microcosm, their Russian roots are prevalent throughout each cut they unleash. And ‘Alarm / Hearing Damage’ reinstates their undeniable weight, with Gydra providing records which not only fit their intimidating signature, but also the standards which run through the veins of an imprint like Trendkill.
‘Alarm’ is a tell-tale track which moves stealthily across ticking percussion throughout its intro, building more and more intense as it rolls into play. Once its breakdown kicks into play, streams of punchy drums fill out its mix, whilst Gydra’s overbearing slices of tight production filters through the composition. Gydra do what they do best and that’s provide an impenetrable style, although this can only be expected from artists who’ve toured the Russian and European circuits extensively, taking with them the inspiration which helped drum & bass to flourish in these territories. And they make a sure-fire addition to Trendkill, further adding to its sure-fire appeal.
‘Hearing Damage’ is just as impressively fashioned, pushing forward on a nasty, biting bassline and once again channelling the same foreboding atmospherics. Each climaxing break helps to weigh down the track’s engineering, before you’re dragged back and forth between a zig-zagging of crunching undertones and tinny pads. The bass swells beneath and each tide takes you out further and further into the track’s depths. Trendkill continues to hold up the skillsets which made its label boss such a revered icon. And with the addition of artists like Gydra within its roster, the New Year is looking to be even more successful for both its artists and labels.
