Beginning its life as both an events project and production outfit, Nuusic is a banner which many jungle and drum & bass fans would have heard, both online and within many club spaces across the UK due to its incredible output. The name given to the outfit which Raifiki Dubs, Joe Mac and Jungglah brought together for b2b DJing performances, their selective tastes and influences helped engineer the label which they’ve been stockpiling dubplates for. With their own sets blending an eclectic mix of reggae, dancehall-influenced ragga jungle and sub driven drum & bass, they pay homage to their roots and this is something which is spread across their vast catalogue of music.
They’ve continued this consistency up to the present day, with their cuts reaching the top 5 positions on junodownload and building support from the scene’s every corner. An example is Grimsey’s forthcoming EP, featuring a collection of new music which signifies how Nuusic invest in newcomer artists, whilst building their own brand in the process.
The ‘Quantum Leap’ EP is comprised of four tracks, each one highlighting a different part of the Grimsey sound. Whilst all featuring a minimal undertow, they demonstrate the focus on percussion within his music, highlighting how he’s become a favourite for many club spaces hoarding formidable speaker stacks. With Revibe adding his on tones to ‘Hands Up’ alongside Grimsey, ‘Tribal’ follows suit, bringing through snapping hi-hats and growling subs. The EP’s title-track ‘Quantum Leap’ continue the assault, driving through with cranking breaks and layers of tinny snare drums. As a collection of elements, you’re taken back to the old-school days where jungle reigned supreme and through this you become aware of how Grimsey fell under the guise or Nuusic, a label committed to this landscape. You’re then introduced to final track ‘Never Been’, following the same route as its forerunners yet also taking you into unfamiliar territory through ragga samples and an explosive second breakdown. It’s another package which platforms what Nuusic means for fans. And it’s something which has enabled them to stay on top of the game, years since their first output and now blossoming into the label it is today.
