Mac 2 Recordings has remained a powerhouse since it was created by drum & bass kingpin DJ Randall. With the experience of Randall, Mac 2 Recordings has become a label which has provided a podium for artists who’ve come under the veteran’s immense scope. Randall’s career has spanned from his background immersed in sound system culture right through to his place within the London rave scene, where he established himself as a pioneer of drum & bass, a fact which has remained indisputable over the last two decades. Mac 2 Recordings was the next progression for Randall, as he’d already showcased a plethora of new music through his sure-fire mixing skills, so it made sense that he’d want a place to release tracks of the same high-standards. After making their beds within the wider dance music market, Mac 2 Recordings are about to unleash about EP which sets itself apart, highlighting once again why Randall is such a revered selector.

Pete Aymer, who goes by the alias Cool Hand Flex, is the next artist to have his take on the Mac 2 Recordings sound. Cool Hand Flex and Randall have a relationship which stretches back to their roots, playing the pivotal Centreforce together whilst working at Pete’s brother’s renowned De Underground record shop. Having co-founded Mac 2 Recordings with Randall, as well as dominating the airwaves of Fantasy FM, Kool FM and Rave FM, Cool Hand Flex is a name already known by many junglists.

The ‘City Dawn’ EP opens with its title-track, which offers up falling breaks and stamping instrumentals. ‘Judgement Song’ rolls the same way, although focusing more on its clashing percussion. Cool Hand Flex then takes on T.I’s ‘All I Do’ taking it down a more old-school route, a track that’s cemented itself as must-have dubplate. Legendary MC Singing Fats joins Cool Hand Flex for ‘The Return’. Whilst ‘Killer’ wraps up the EP with its smashing amen breaks and clashing hi-hats. Cool Hand Flex, with Randall’s trademark, shows why we should be watching Mac 2 Recordings and how they bridge the gap between the roots of drum & bass and its current place within dance music.
