Seeing out a seismic year for Elsta’s Murky Digital imprint which has seen the label recently top the Juno Download Drum & Bass Chart, newcomer Amplify steps up to the plate with his label debut in the form of the Eight EP.

The five-track project bookends what has been a prolific 2020 for the 23-year-old DJ/producer. Having never released anything on streaming services before the start of the year, the Devon native has since signed records to esteemed labels including Pick ‘N’ Mix, Zombie Recordings and Sub-Division, and has even gone on to set up his own label, Gradient Records.
Fast gaining a reputation as a jump-up specialist, the Newton Abbot youngster hones in on his signature sound over the course of the EP, pairing guttural bass design with choppy, syncopated rhythms to great effect. Opening proceedings, the project’s titular offering “Eight” revolves around resonant, slinking basslines and is furnished with throbbing vocal cuts and thunderous snares. Meanwhile, “Flavaz” jitters and jolts, its piercing, metallic synth work striking in an off-kilter fashion to make for a no-nonsense jump-up belter.

Taking things up a notch is the relentless “Out of Me”, with each of its throaty, clipped notes serving as an aural sucker punch for the senses, ducking and weaving in and out of the mix. Sonically in the same vein, “Miracle” opens with twinkling, arpeggiated melodies before diving into a similarly boisterous onslaught of low-end audio artillery. Wrapping things up is the snarling stepper “Lost It”, a suitably grand finale to a project which, as his name suggests, is nothing less than amped-up. With legends of the D&B scene including Noisia, Logan D, Nicky Blackmarket and Kenny Ken already spinning his tunes in their sets, you’d best get acquainted with Amplify.
