UK Drum & Bass Producer Feint Teams Up w/ Chinese Superstar R7CKY For New Single

- Hey Feint, thanks so much for taking the time to talk with us today. To start, congrats on the release of “Lost & Found”! Can you tell us a little bit about the track and how it came to be?
Hey, no worries! The track started off as a collection of ideas based around the idea of a slower feeling track building towards a final powerful and faster feeling crescendo. It was an interesting combination of concepts from myself and R7CKY who obviously has a very different approach to writing and producing electronic music.
- When you sat down to make this one, what was the production process like?
As usual from my end, it involved first thinking of a powerful and memorable main melody, which is introduced towards the second half of the track. I had already written a lot of ideas before receiving ideas from R7CKY to include in the first half. A lot of the production process was making sure that these separate ideas came together to feel cohesive and part of the overall story.
- How did you connect with R7CKY? What was it like working with him?
I was introduced to R7CKY via the Monstercat team - despite the language barrier (although he has some proficiency in English and I have limited proficiency in Mandarin) it was very easy to work together! He included a lot of great ideas and input which I incorporated in the final project.
- You’ve been producing music for over a decade, would you say that your style and sound have evolved over the years? If so, what influenced that change?
My sound has definitely evolved, although (like every musician) I am still honing in on the essence of my own style. Everything that moves me, visually or aurally, has somewhat of an effect on my style, and of course is a gradual shift from my starting point. My internal feelings stemming from my personality and viewpoint have also changed, which definitely also changes my own tastes in what I create - I think this is completely natural for any artist of any type!
- What artist would you like to collaborate with outside of the electronic music space?
There are far far too many to list! The answer to this question changes a lot; it really depends on my mood at the time, as to what I feel inspired to create. I think that between any artists there may be some surprising crossovers in mentality or approach - I think depending on who the collaborator would be, I would also think very carefully about how I would adapt my own style.
- What advice would you give to someone who is just starting their career as a producer?
My advice is definitely to just not obsess over current trends, but to just try and make music that you yourself would like to hear! Nowadays with the increase of accessibility and popularity of music production, the market is flooded with a lot of people who are just copying their favourite artist - focus on learning to be your own thing!
- As things start to return to normal, what are some of your goals for 2022? Any upcoming shows or collaborations that fans can look forward to?
2022 is looking up in terms of shows! I’m already getting mentally prepped to start playing more regularly again, I hadn’t realised how different it felt not having them. Other than that, I have some really really cool plans in terms of new music and I’m already knee-deep in projects that I’m incredibly excited about!
Many thanks for your time! - JDNB Team
