Nick The Lot Interview

Nick The Lot Interview

Nick The Lot is an electrician hailing from Brighton with a host of new tracks on Grid. We take some time to have a quick chat and find out what's going on in his world.

Thanks for taking the time to talk to us. Go back to when it started for you, when was that and what tunes and artists inspired you?

So I was pretty young when I was given a cubase cd and was hooked immediately. Back then the sound that I was really into was Hazard, Twisted Individual, Dillinja, Pendulum, Mampi Swift, Bad Company, Clipz, G dub, off the top of my head. Tunes that spring to mind would of been Dillinja and Lemon D - What bass, Twisted Individual - F word, Ram Trilogy’s - Pac-Man and Mampi Swift – Trippin’.

What came first, production or DJing?

DJing came first. My mate at school had decks and we’d go to his a lot to mix Happy Hardcore. Got myself a set of Numarks not long after and thankfully I soon moved on to Dnb.

Your first track "Sound Of A Feeling" was one of the first tracks picked up by Tyke for Hologaphic Audio, tell us about that.

Yeah a few people around me were all pretty on my case to get that one out there. So I sent it to Tykes holographic audio email I saw on Soundcloud. I didn’t get a reply for a couple months or so until he saw it, but it wasn’t long after until it was released and played by Rene Lavice on Radio 1. Great feeling that was.

Where is your favourite club to play out?

I’d have to say the Volks, Brighton. Been going there on and off since I was a kid and if it’s a busy night upstairs it’s always a good vibe.

You started on Cubase, are you still on Cubase?

I am yes, think I’ve only updated it once so I’m using a very old fashion version, but still love it.

Favourite plug ins?

I use Kontakt and pretty much only Massive really, sometimes Sylenth too. Still learning new stuff with massive every time I use it.

Tell us about some of your other releases?

I’ve got a forthcoming EP with Subliminal Oct 18th which I’m looking forward to getting out there. I’m working on some bits for Prototype Recordings. Few remixes coming soon to Grid. And also some tracks on a Zombie LP coming up.

You must be stoked to have releases on Twisted's labels Grid and Zombie with the historical influences in the drum and bass scene. Tell us about the labels meaning to you and is there anything to look forward to on the labels for the future?

Yeah of course. I’ve always been listening to Grid and Zombie so its great being on there myself now. Yeah loads to look forward to. Lots of good Artists on there with forthcoming stuff!

You're playing in Bristol soon and Hastings? What's your ideal DJ set up and did you ever play out on vinyl?

Yeah Hastings was a wicked night, and I’m looking forward to Bristol at the end of the month. Set up wise just decent monitors and to have the decks high enough as I’m 6’4. Yeah I played out a few times on Vinyl. Much prefer carrying a usb stick around these days.

Favourite Grid release ever?

Tyke - Infected headphones. Still play that one now, and also have a bootleg I’ve made of it.

Twisted’s - Wobble by Nature is a wicked tune that I’ve also remixed. Coming soon!

What are your goals and aspirations for the future?

Just to better my sound, get more releases and more Sets. I wouldn’t mind doing some bits abroad too.

If I gave you £10k what would you do with it and why?

Some new hub caps as someone nicked mine the other week. Rent, bills and a nice holiday.

What's next for your studio set up?

I wouldn’t mind the bigger versions of my Genelec monitors but that may be overkill in my studio. Other than that I’m pretty happy with my set up.

What do you like best about www.jungledrumandbass.co.uk

It’s a great place to go check out all the latest drum and bass news and events.

Who are your top 3 up and coming DJs right now?

Producers I’d say Warhead, Leaf and Yatuza. All have their own sound going on.

Any favourite MCs?

Yeah a few of my mates are pretty good after a few pints down the pub.

If you could collab with anyone who and why?

I’d have to say Hazard. Always loved his sound!

Lastly - any shouts and thanks?

Too many to mention individually but I’d like to give a shout to everyone who’s released or releasing my tunes, and everyone who’s supporting them. It means a lot.

Thank you for taking time out to chat with us.
