Netrom
Netrom hails from Estonia and has his first release out. As a new and inspiring artist we wanted to find out a little more, give him some props and tell you about this exciting new producer!
Thanks for talking to us in these difficult times. COVID-19 seems to be affecting everyone globally right now, how has it been for you in Estonia?
Surprisingly, not much much has changed for me besides the fact I work more at the computer at home, instead of going to the office. Thankfully, none of my close ones have had any problems either and I've also had a lot more time on my hands to make music.
Tell us about music and growing up, how long you have been DJing and making music?
Music fascinated since I was a little boy and I think that my guitarist father, with whom he attended big concerts from the ground up, is largely to account for this. Already back then I realised that music gives you a kind of a freedom to think what you want and really helps you experience powerful feelings which you otherwise might miss out on. I was in relatively difficult circumstances as a child, but I always found solace and freedom in music that was hard to find anywhere else. I started DJ'ing and producing approximately 3 years ago, and have kept it up every day since.
Are you happy with your DAW, set up and studio monitors? What equipment have you got and what equipment would you love?
I'm using Cubase 10.5 and am extremely happy with! Have a set of Yamaha HS8 monitors, RME Babyface Pro, two sets of headphones and a Steinberg cc121 daw controller for a faster workflow. For the future I am looking our for a better set of monitors.
How is the drum and bass scene in Estonia right now and which are your favourite clubs and festivals?
Drum and bass is doing alright in Estonia, we have some cool events and smaller festivals like Beach Grind and Liquicity Estonia. There are various local talents showing up at those shows and usually there are some big names invited over as a main act. Rusko, Camo & Krooked, Sigma, Netsky to name some that have made appearances. However, as Estonia is a small country and rather limited, I personally favour events abroad like Let it roll.
This is your first release right? So you haven't been making music long?
It is my first release indeed. I've been making music more seriously for the past 3 years.
Who are your top 5 producers and why do they inspire you?
My top 5 are: CULTURE SHOCK, Sub Focus, Grafix, Matrix & Futurebound and Wilkinson.
I like them because they make me feel and experience new perspectives, similarly to how I want to make other people feel when they listen to my music.
If I gave you £10k, what would you do with it and why?
Most likely I would invest the money into my career and the rest into something secure for the rainy days...
If you weren't making music, what would be your dream job?
That is a great question. About three years ago one of my friend asked me what would I do if I had all the money in the world, to which I said I want to make music and play at shows. If I wouldn't be making music, most likely I'd stick with real estate that's my other passion.
Who would you most like to collaborate with and why?
Wilkinson, as I have a good connection with his tunes and he has been amazing inspiration for me.
Which up and coming artists in Estonia or established artists should we look out for?
We don't have a lot of native drum and bass artists in Estonia, but the one I'd look out for overall would be Cartoon, definitely hold your eyes open for these guys.
Do you have any favourite Estonian MCs and which UK ones do you love?
From Estonia not, but from UK, I'd say Skibadee.
We love to hear feedback, what do you think of our jungledrumandbass.co.uk website?
As I recently discovered it, I was drawn in by its intuitive and straight-forward layout, the fact that it brings together events with great content and provides a platform for up and coming artist to display their works. Also, as I've had the chance to interact with the staff, it seems that it is run by enthusiastic people who are very diligent about their work.
Well thank you! What are your plans for the next 3 months?
At the moment I am sorting out my material for an EP I have in the works, so mostly I will be focusing on that.
Your plans for the next 3 years?
Keep consistently putting out good music and sharpening my music and songwriting skills along the way.
If you could take one piece of music on a desert island, what would it be?
Wilkinson - Half Light ft. Tom Cane
Who do you think are the top 3 role models in dnb?
Sub Focus, Wilkinson and Dimension.
Which party will you be going to as soon as we are all off lockdown?
Liquicity.
So the 29th May is your first release, any thanks, shouts or love?
Wishing you'll have a good experience listening to it and hope you'll be able to feel some of the influences I've mentioned above and the vision I am going after. Thanks for taking the time to check out this interview and the track and hopefully you'll be sticking around for the long run!
Many thanks. All the best for 2020 and beyond!
