JDNB Interview - Pink Slime

JDNB Interview - Pink Slime

Pink Slime developed an interest in mixing and learned to spin vinyl records in the 90’s. He took notice of different music coming from the UK (Jungle/Drum & Bass). After it's influence, the flood gates were open to the vast world of electronic music exploration and exploitation. He was a resident at Organized Grime in San Diego, CA for 5 years. Fast forward a bit to today, Pink Slime resides in Las Vegas, NV USA. He is releasing original tunes on many notable labels across the globe and his DJ sets are full of rough and funky energy.

First of all, thanks for taking the time out to talk with us. Tell us about what you've been up to?
Thanks for having me, It’s an honor. I have been busy working on finding labels for a bunch of completed projects as well as setting up collaborations as future projects. I have also been on the hunt for a manager and someone to help with bookings.

Where did your musical journey begin?
I have been producing and playing shows for 14 years. First as "Bladeface" focused on Dubstep and D&B and then formed the "Pink Slime" project in 2011 focused on Drum & Bass and more recently UK Bass/Bass House.

Talk a little about your influences?
It all started when I heard The Prodigy on the radio… Which lead to me finding Drum & Bass in the form of Sub Focus, Pendulum, and Netsky before diving into the depths of D&B to discover legends like Heist, Taxman, Tantrum Desire, and Drumsound Bassline Smith!

Pink Slime's forthcoming EP 'Remants' Is set to release on legendary Italian Dance label MilleVille Music as part of their new Accelerant Records Imprint which is dedicated to Drum & Bass
Thats right, MilleVille Music has decided to start an imprint focused on Drum & Bass. The lead single ‘Echo’ from my upcoming EP and a few other tunes from other talented artists have already been released.

Tell us about your inspiration behind the EP?
With Remnants, each song represents an extremely vulnerable moment in my life. Each of them left lasting impressions in my mind that reverberate on.

'Echo'
The lead single, displays the feelings of losing a loved one and not letting the memories of them fade away over time.

'FML'
Represents the powerlessness of being a victim and not being able to do anything to stop it or prevent it from happening again. That absolute feeling of helplessness that has you saying FML!

'Just Breathe'
Touches on an experience drowning in the southern California ocean moments before being rescued by lifeguards. The sheer panic of death, followed by a sense of calm and reassurance that everything was at peace. Waking up to a circle of blurred faces I first assumed were ancestors waiting to greet me on the other side. I soon realized they were all strangers concerned for my well-being as I was just brought back to life before their eyes.

'Keep On Dreaming'
Is about overcoming all the negative feelings associated with chasing your dreams. All the haters, self doubt, and insecurities we feel can weigh on us. It's important to keep those feelings in check and remember to keep pushing forward, and never give up until you achieve your idea of success.

The full release drops on Accelerant Records on the 14th of July!
Yes, I’m super excited to share it with everyone as I am super proud of how it turned out and the story it tells
Pre-Order / Pre Save Here!

Let's talk studio, what are you cooking on?
For a DAW I use Logic Pro X on a Mac with an i7 processor. For Audio gear, I use Yamaha HS7 monitors with sub, AKG K240 headphones, and V Moda Crossfade 2 headphones. And for midi hardware I use an Akai 25 Key Midi Keyboard with beatpads and a PreSonus Faderport 8 mixing console.

Top 3 plug-ins?
My most used plugins are Serum, Izotope Ozone, and LFO Tool

Top 3 pieces of analogue gear?
Akai 25 Key Midi Keyboard, PreSonus Faderport 8 mixing console, and Mackie big knob.

Your top tips for the budding producers out there?
Do as many remix contests as possible to analyze the stems so you can see the structure of projects. Once you see what the established artists do and the formats they use, you can incorporate those techniques into your original projects and create freely with confidence.

Where can we catch you performing next?
I have nothing scheduled at the moment.

Any upcoming projects we should be on the look out for?
Obviously the ‘Remnants’ EP on July 14th and there may or may not be an upcoming collaboration with MC AD in the works.

Dream collaboration?
Sub Focus all the way. He’s always been a huge inspiration for me and he has remained at the top of the scene for a long time so it only makes sense.

What would you say you like most about the JDNB website?
I love that JDNB unites the Drum & Bass community and gives a platform for the community to enjoy an insider look at the music they love.

Lastly thanks for taking the time to chat with us, any shout outs or dedications?
Shout to all the junglists out there representing the scene and pushing it forward. I love seeing the support we are starting to get stateside in the DnB scene. Shouts to Pasquale Rotella, DJ Nightstalker, BASSRUSH, Insomniac, RESPECT, Organized Grime, Danny Jenk, Tasha Tribe Steppas, Joe B. aka. Stasis.
