JDNB Interview: Motiv

JDNB Interview: Motiv

Hailing from Manchester with release's on Fokuz Recordings and Original Key Records, we catch up with Motiv ahead of his debut release on Innerground Music.

Hi, thanks for chatting with us here at JDNB. Tell us a bit about yourself and where you come from?

Hi, thanks for taking the time to do this interview with me! My name is Jonny Porter AKA Motiv and I'm a music producer based in Manchester, UK.

In your own words ‘what is jungle / drum and bass’?

In my opinion, it is like modern day jazz. There is so much freedom for expression within the genre and so many different sounds, styles and moods that can be portrayed.

Describe your sound?

My music definitely pushes more towards the soulful side of things but I wouldn't necessarily say that I have a certain "sound". When I make music, I just make what feels right at the time, no matter what the genre or style.

Is this your 1st release with Innerground Music and give us an insight into the track and the procedure of working with Innerground Music.

It is Yes ! I'm honored to be working with the label as they've been a significant part of my own journey in music growing up. The EP has contrasting themes and collaborations with Collette Warren and Surreal. I wanted to showcase a full spectrum of my work in terms of style and I try to do this with most projects I put out there.

What would you say has been your 3 biggest achievements so far within the drum and bass scene?

I have recently released my first 12 track LP entitled 'Meraki Music' on Co-Lab Recordings which reached number one in the Juno chart, a huge milestone in my career. I also played a gig for charity to raise money for the Sunshine Nursery School in Gambia with LTJ Bukem which was a really amazing and humbling experience. Lastly, I had a featured interview on UKF off the back of my album which was great as well!

What does your studio consist of, and what’s your fav plug-in or piece of kit to use?

I work on Ableton 10 and use Yamaha HS7 monitors. I work mainly with a keyboard, guitar and an SP404 sampler but other than that i have no major pieces of kit! I'm looking to invest in some more synthesizers in the future though. My favorite plug-in(s) are from U-he though, they have a lot of wicked synths you can get some amazing sounds from.

Where do you get your inspiration from when making tracks?

I get my inspiration musically from anything non d&b. I listen to a lot of hip hop, soul, jazz and easy listening stuff but I get most of my inspiration from places I visit and experiences in life. I think these things give me the most to write about because they are the realest (which sounds really deep haha).

What's the best bit of advice you can give to up and coming producers to get their tracks heard by labels?

Don't try to imitate somebody else because only you can do you. Even if nobody understands it at first, at least you can make your mark on the scene by bringing something original and fresh. Also take your time and learn your craft and listen to all music not just d&b.

If you could remix one track from the Innerground Music back catalog, which one would it be?

That's such a tuff one cos all tracks are quality and i wouldn't do them justice haha. If i had to pick it would be something from Collette's hidden lines EP maybe 'One Exception' for the amazing vocals.

Name your top 5 Innerground Music tracks?

1. Channell - An Untitled Summer

2. Random Movement - The Things You Do

3. Calibre - Simple Sa

4. DJ Marky - Silly

5. Collette Warren - Rum & Ginger (Ft Ben Soundscape, RoyGreen & Protone)

What are your goals for the next year?

I'd love to release another album, this time with a mix of different genres in there. I'd like to get out there and play some more gigs and festivals and just keep making the music I love!

What would you say you like most about the www.jungledrumandbass.co.uk website?

I love the consistency and support that the website gives new and upcoming artists and the diversity of the content!

Thanks for your time. Lastly, any thanks or shoutouts?

First and foremost shout to Jdnb and the whole Innerground team for making this happen and shout out to everyone who has supported me this far and enjoyed the music i've been putting out!
