JDNB Interview - Joely

JDNB Interview - Joely
Joely is a drum and bass producer and dj from Nottingham UK, who has had an obsession with dnb for most of his life. He started djing around 7 years ago and producing around 2, he’s had track support from the likes of Voltage, Dj Hybrid, Sub Zero and many more.

He currently makes up 1/5th of the dnb outfit Dungeon Kru so it was only a matter of time before Liondub International came calling to get an EP signed to the legendary Liondub Street Series.  He took some time out from making tracks to have a little chat with us here at JDNB.

Thanks for chatting with us here at JDNB.  How have you been coping with the Covid-19 Pandemic and what have you been doing to fill your time?

My time during the lockdown has just been filled with producing, producing, producing to be honest haha, i had it as my goal to start a tune each day from when it began and i very nearly succeeded in this mission! Other than producing i’ve been skating and enjoying the furlough life to the fullest

Tell us a little bit about yourself and where you get your musical ability from?

I’m Joel aka Joely and i’m from Nottingham UK, i’ve always had a love for dance/electronic music and i used to try and produce in school but got heavily bullied for it so i didn’t take it as seriously as i do now but it’s always been in my blood! From an early age my mum introduced me to the artist “Moby” who is one of my absolute main inspirations because i love everything that man creates!

What would you say has been your 3 biggest achievements so far within the drum and bass scene?

Definitely getting nominated for track of the year 2020 alongside some names i’ve looked up to from the dawn of time!

I have a New Zealand tour coming up which is also a major achievement for me, being flown across the world to play music to other people is such a humbling, amazing feeling!

Finally it has to be L-Side remixing one of my tracks!

What does your studio consist of, and what’s your fav plug-in?

My studio consists of my lil beauties my rokit 5 g4’s, say what you will about rokit but i genuinely swear by them! I also have a korg minilogue xd which i use to make most of my sounds and i use ableton as my daw!

If i had to choose a favourite plug in it would have to be output’s thermal, it’s just unreal, if you haven’t checked it out, definitely do!

Any new producers we should be keeping our ears open for that you are linking with?

There is SO many to mention but the people need to fucking know about my donny KONZ KONZ KONZ KONZ KONZ! We’ve got multiple collabs down and a lot more to come so keep your ears out for those! Also my Dungeon Kru family are absolute badman producers!

Your recent release ‘Badman EP’ on the legendary Liondub Street Series is out now!!. Describe the feeling you had when asked to do this project?

Absolutely ecstatic, it was always a dream of mine to be on that dollar bill!

Which track did you have the most fun making?

I have fun making all tracks to be honest, producing is my everything so if i’m not having fun making every tune then something must be wrong!

What bit of advice would you give to new producers wanting to get their tracks heard by the major labels?

Be versatile and think outside of the box, don’t follow anyone else, just do you.

How's things going with Dungeon Kru, any news to break???

Oh man where do i start, these dudes are my fam and i just love them all to absolute bits, they’re always there for me when i need someone and welcomes me in the kru with the most open arms, i can’t even begin to express how much i appreciate them!

And for news, we have loads of collabs coming and I remixed ‘Dead Tonight’, which is one of my favourite tunes by the kru!

Where do you get your inspiration from when making tracks?

Old hip hop, house, breakbeat etc!

If you could remix one track from Liondub International, which one would it be?

100% kumo - Devils Lettuce, hopefully he lets me if i ask him.

Name your top 5 Liondub International tracks?

Kumo - Devils Lettuce

Vital - Take Me Home

Jayline - Anglo Saxxon

Dungeon Kru - Movie Star (Free Download)

Vital - Recognise

What are your goals for the next year?

To make as many tunes as i did last year, keep progressing and meet more new people along this crazy ride!

What would you say you like most about the www.jungledrumandbass.co.uk website?

The whole layout is fantastic and easy to navigate!

Thanks for your time.  Lastly any thanks or shoutouts?

I want to thank each individual person who supports me and my music, it really does mean the world to me! Shouts out my Dungeon Kru family, and shout out all the producers i’ve worked with, basically just shoutout everyone init, bless!!
