JDNB Interview - Dunk
Originating from São Paulo, Brazil, Dunk is one half of world-renowned Jam Thieves. He may be a new name to the drum and bass scene but he is no stranger to producing the sounds we all love to hear. Now after 10 years of working with Jam Thieves, Dunk always sought a solo project and boy has he been hard at work. We caught up with him to find out more and also talk about his 'True Funk EP' which is out now on Liondub International.
Hi, thanks for chatting with us here at JDNB. How have you been coping with the Covid-19 Pandemic and what have you been doing to fill your time?
Well, for a while I thought I was unlucky to have started my solo project along with the pandemic, but I understood that it was something I couldn't predict and decided to use it to my advantage. So today I spend my time working a lot, proof of that are the stamps I managed to sign. I'm not playing at parties yet, but I'm getting recognized in another way. This is the result of many hours sitting in a studio.
Great to see you doing solo projects and loving the releases to date, but does this mean an end to Jam Thieves?
I am very happy to hear that you are enjoying it! That's my goal.
And as for Jam Thieves, it was the end as a duo. Jam still exists with my ex co-worker also playing alone.
There are many great artists that have come from São Paulo, Brazil, and I think everyone will agree you have made your mark in the dnb scene. Where would you suggest someone go when visiting São Paulo to check some drum and bass?
Marky & Friends are amazing, really cool and there's also another party called ForBass which is really good. All two in downtown São Paulo..
In your own words ‘what is drum and bass’?
When I talk about drum and bass, it makes me very happy and it's a pleasure to listen and produce, as well as making people dance and enjoy. This makes the production more and more amazing for me. Drum and bass is my life..
What musical influences did you have growing up?
In my house we have always had various musical styles, from soul, funk, rock, hip hop... I believe that a little of each helped me to become who I am today, with my musical taste and inspiration to create.
What first got you into jungle drum and bass, was there a specific track that made you think “yeah this is the genre for me”?
I don't really have a specific track. I've always been a big fan of Hype. At the time, he released a lot for TruePlayaz. From there I started to delve into the genre and never stopped.(really good memory)
What would you say has been your 3 biggest achievements so far within the drum and bass scene?
Definitely the trips I was able to do, playing in different places and meeting people who listen to my music, the recognition I have, because I'm always treated with great affection and the incredible stamps I was able to sign.
Which countries do you enjoy DJ’in at the most? Who brings the biggest vibes??
Definitely uk and also fell in love with the Czech Republic. They are great at what they do and I loved meeting and playing for them. (Can't forget my Colombian friends) very great vibe
What does your studio consist of, and what’s your fav plug-in or piece of kit to use?
I don't have many tools in my studio, I confess, but the one I use the most is Europa Synthesizer and Thor Polisonic.
Who are your top 3 dnb producers right now and why?
DLR, I had the pleasure of working with him on his own label (Sofa Sound)
Hazard, he's a ghoulish guy. It really scares what he does, it's amazing.
TI, I always liked his productions and at the moment we are doing good things together.
Your latest release ‘True Funk’ is out now on Liondub International, and as a vinyl release too! How did this project come together?
I've always been a big fan of the label and from then on I looked for Érik. We started planning a special release. Besides, I always had the dream of having a vinyl release and Éric made it for me! So it was a project that came out of a lot of admiration and respect.
What bit of advice would you give to new producers wanting to get their tracks heard by the major labels?
I advise you to have patience and wisdom. Feedback is very important for you to know where to improve, so use it to your advantage. It's difficult at times, but patience and persistence is the key.
Where do you get your inspiration from when making tracks?
I really enjoy being with my family. I live in a very happy environment in my house. This motivates me to work and consequently to come up with ideas.
If you could remix one track from Liondub International, which one would it be?
Actually I'm already remixing one but it's a surprise for you guys! You will soon know!
What are your goals for the next year?
Play . Play a lot! I can't wait to play at parties, be with the crowd, gather, feel that energy and see people enjoying my music. Surely in 2022 there will be many parties of mine out there, wait!
What would you say you like most about the www.jungledrumandbass.co.uk website?
I like that it's a very dynamic site with lots of useful and important information. This brings a lot of clarity to the news in the drum and bass world.
Thanks for your time. Lastly, any thanks or shoutouts?
I would like to thank everyone who listens to my tunes, who follows me, who follows me and give's me all the support. Everything I do is for you ….Big love guys ….
