JDNB Interview - Corrupted Mind

JDNB Interview - Corrupted Mind

Corrupted Mind aka Reece Mason has a new LP out now on Liondub Street Series.  The 22yr old has been perfecting his skillz over lockdown which has caught the eye of some major labels, and well deserved too.  We had a catch up to find out more.

Hi, thanks for chatting with us here at JDNB.  How have you been coping with the Covid-19 Pandemic and what have you been doing to fill your time?

Well basically covid actually helped if anything as I’ve had the time to really craft my skills and just focus on music production. Post covid my tunes were not really all that.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and where you are from?

I’m 22 years old and from the Gravesend, Kent area I’ve been making drum and bass for about 2 years now.

In your own words ‘what is drum and bass’?

No words can describe drum and bass, the feeling you get is untouchable

What musical influences did you have growing up?

Was always curious about The Prodigy from a young age and then dubstep in my early teen years. Then I found a love for rock music / bands and stuff then onto techno, future house etc then evolved into drum and bass and now it’s all I listen to really. Sometimes I’ll check out a house tune or something.

What first got you into jungle drum and bass, and was there a specific track that made you think “yeah this is the genre for me”?

Well I first heard dnb without knowing it as a kid, listening to pendulum etc from other people. But when I was about 14 to 16 I hated dnb could not stand it. I may like a commercial track on a good day. But then I heard Azza’s ‘Bars n Bass’ and the backing track (TNT - Dominator Remix) got me in shock and I was just blown away from the womps in that tune and was looking for weeks and weeks trying to find this track not knowing it was a dub. I think that feeling of hunting for that one tune got me hooked since I found so many similar tunes from Dom and then Turno and Macky Gee. And Macky Gee ‘Black Widow’ and ‘Seduction’ were the first tunes I had on my phone that I remember and it is a bit mad to think they came out on the same EP series as my EP. Full circle really.

What would you say has been your 3 biggest achievements so far within the drum and bass scene?

Firstly my Liondub Street Series LP, this to me is just mental.

Secondly would be pendulum giving my new track 5/5 and an outstanding comment that’s really hit me hard.

Third it would probably be the connection I’ve mad with so many new people, and new friends that have been made

What does your studio consist of, and what’s your fav plug-in (if used)?

I have a very basic tbh, a decent pc built by my mate Tom big up to him.  Pair of m audio bx5s some decks and that’s it really. Favourite plugin has to be serum but for fx stuff probably patcher on fl.

Who are your top 3 dnb producers right now and why?

A.M.C this man is a goat.  Turno for his high energy tunes, unreal sets, unreal performance and he's probably helped me the most to get to where I am.  Red Pill, this guys production is mental.

Your latest release ‘Liondub Street Series Vol.60: Focus’ is out now on the Liondub International. How did it feel when you knew it was getting a release?

This was the biggest moment of my career and when I found out I was going mental screaming the lot was over the moon.

What bit of advice would you give to new producers wanting to get their tracks heard by the major labels?

Make sure the mixdowns are on point first. I made the mistake of sending stuff out before it was ready. Once you get the mixes on point just send emails out to Facebook pages or the demo links etc. Just make sure to send a professional email

Where do you get your inspiration from when making tracks?

Honestly it comes from anything listening to a mix checking a new tune getting gassed up

If you could remix one track from Liondub International,  which one would it be?

Easy, it would be Bladerunner and Johnny Osbourne - ‘Night Fall Dub’.

Name your top 5 Liondub International tracks?

Bladerunner and Johnny Osbourne - Night Fall Dub

Jayline - Network

Macky Gee - Seduction

Sub Killaz - Ghetto Blaster

Burnzy - Hands Up

What are your goals for the next year?

Aiming to hopefully get some more jump up bits on liondub and also final shell put a rave

Thanks for your time lastly any shoutouts?

Shouts to everyone supporting me and my new release on Liondub International.  Also shout to Erik for getting my music out there.
